Different Types of Eczema

Eczema is not a single skin condition which conflicts with what many people think. In fact it is not a skin condition at all! It is actually a disorder of the immune system which results in the symptoms that opccur on the skin. Whatever the causes may be though, there are actually as number of different ailments that fall under the eczema banner. Below is a run down of some of the more common eczema conditions that afflict a huge number of people through part of, or thier whole lives.

Atopic Dermatitis

This is a type of eczema that primarily affects children, but not exclusively. Many children get atopic dermatitis but "grow out of it" as they get older thankfully. However many keep it with them through their lives, and a few other people manage to develop it later in life as well.

It causes dry, itchy, irritated skin that will require care on a daily basis especially in children. Atopic dermatitis is not contagious though, it is a condition within oneself not from viruses caught by other people. This skin condition version of eczema is often hereditary and other in the family may have it, or might have asthma which is another link.

Allergic Contact Dermatitis

Allergic Contact Dermatitis is a type of eczema that is caused by an allergic reaction to a substance that is placed against the skin. Many people have this reaction to certain metals that makes it hard for them to wear jewellery or metallic parts on their clothes. You can also get this condition from certain fabrics as they rub against the skin while you wear them, and also from chemicals in cleaning fluids and other chemically made substances we use around the homes.
There are in fact many more allergic reactions that can happen but these are a few of the more common ones.

Nummular Dermatitis

Nummular Dermatitis appears on the body as small to medium sized round red markings of dry, scaly skin. They can be itchy and feel like they are burning many times and can appear all over the body.

One odd thing that has been noticed is that it is mainly found in males over 55, and females between 15 and 25. These are not the ONLY ages and genders that get affected however, but there seems to be more in these ranges than in others which some link to hormonal changes of men and women at those times.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic Dermatitis is often called dandruff by most people but this is an oversimplification. This type of eczema primaily effects the scalp of the head causing dry fraky skin which most people have seen and most expereinced at some point. Very bad outbreaks of Seborrheic Dermatitis however can go behind the scalp to the face and other parts of the body too.

This is another eczema that can affects children too and is often called "cradle cap" in infants.
